International Tea Day is a momentous occasion celebrated globally on May 21st each year to promote and highlight the significance of tea in our lives. Tea, one of the most beloved beverages in the world, holds a special place in various cultures and traditions. On this International Tea Day, we delve into the fascinating story of Assam tea, its remarkable journey over the past 200 years, and the vibrant celebrations marking this milestone.
In 2005, the first International Tea Day was commemorated in New Delhi, India. Since then, tea-growing nations like Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Uganda, and Tanzania joined the celebrations. A decade later, the Indian government, in collaboration with the FAO Intergovernmental Group on Tea, proposed expanding the observance of International Tea Day. In 2019, the United Nations' General Assembly officially designated May 21st as International Tea Day.
Assam tea, known for its robust flavor and distinct character, has a remarkable history that spans two centuries. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Assam tea, the Tea Board India and the Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Assam, released a new logo that pays tribute to this illustrious heritage. The logo draws inspiration from the traditional "gamusa," a revered Assamese cloth that recently received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Bimal Bora, Industry minister, Dy Chairman, Tea Board, K. Tasa, MP(Rajya Sabha) inaugurated the Assam tea logo at a function in the Administrative staff college. A short film on tea was screened and subsidy cheques were distributed to small growers. The logo color has been taken from gamusa.
The government of Assam has taken significant steps to promote and support the growth of Assam tea, recognizing its historical and economic significance. In the budget session, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog announced an allocation of approximately Rs 550 crore (USD 68 million) for the fiscal year 2023-24. These funds will be utilized to unlock the potential of tea garden land and promote agriculture and allied activities.
To further incentivize the production of orthodox tea and specialty tea in Assam, the Assam Tea Industries Special Incentives Scheme (ATISIS), introduced in 2020, will be strengthened. This program aims to provide financial support and encouragement to tea producers involved in the cultivation and production of high-quality orthodox and specialty teas. The government acknowledges the unique characteristics and market demand for these teas and seeks to foster their growth in the region.
Moreover, in line with the momentous occasion of celebrating 200 years of Assam tea in 2023, the state government has ambitious plans to showcase Assam Tea as a brand and highlight the rich socio-cultural heritage of the tea garden communities. This will be achieved through the organization of road shows in major cities across India and abroad. These roadshows will serve as platforms to promote Assam tea, educate the public about its unique qualities, and create awareness about the tea garden communities' contributions to the tea industry.
By unlocking the potential of tea garden land for agriculture and allied activities, the government of Assam aims to harness the economic opportunities presented by this fertile land. This initiative will not only contribute to the growth and diversification of the agricultural sector but also support the socio-economic development of tea garden communities.

As part of the 200-year celebrations, the GTAC Tea Lounge has opened a kiosk, offering high-quality CTC, Orthodox, and Green Tea to the public free of cost. This initiative allows tea enthusiasts to savor the finest Assam teas, experiencing their rich flavors and diverse profiles. Assam tea holds a significant position in the Indian tea industry, with the GTAC reporting impressive sales worth Rs. 3300 crores (USD 412.5 million) during the financial year 2022-2023.

In recent times, it has fetched a substantial price of approximately Rs. 5100 per kg ( USD 1214 ) at auctions.
